Updating your computer

Frequent updating can help keep your computer running smooth and eliminate bugs. You can update as often as you want, but at least once a week is suggested. Unlike some other operating systems, your Linux system is designed so you are the boss. You are in control. While you being the controller means your computer won't just update without your consent, it also means you'll have to take the initiative. Your computer is awaiting your orders. Neglect updating at your own peril.

Fortunately, updating your computer has been made exceedingly easy for you. Open the Terminal by clicking on the QTerminal icon in the panel or choosing "System Tools --> QTerminal" from the menu. Type "updateall" as one word without the quotes and click "Enter". You'll be prompted for your password. Keep in mind while entering your password in the terminal you will never see any action. No dots or letters appear. This is a security feature and doesn't mean your keyboard isn't working.

Your computer will go about the task of updating. If prompted, answer accordingly -- usually typing a "y" for "yes" if your language is English. Once the updating is complete, the terminal will return to the original "m@astara $" prompt. During this process, not only does your operating system get updated but all installed software programs do as well.
